$50,000 Awarded to Robinson-Shuba Statue Project

The Youngstown Foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant for the completion of the Robinson-Shuba Statue Project.

The statue commemorates the historic 1946 handshake between baseball legend Jackie Robinson and Youngstown native George Shuba.

This interaction, exchanged in recognition of Robinson’s first Minor League home run, is believed to be the first handshake between black and white players on a professional baseball diamond. Robinson and Shuba played for the Montreal Royals, an affiliate of the Brooklyn Dodgers.
